Yaariyan 2 Controversy: Film Makers Warned by SGPC over Sikh Kirpan Scene

  • The sequel to the 2014 film “Yaariyan”, titled “Yaariyan 2”, is embroiled in controversy even before its release. The first part of the film was a box office hit and starred Himansh Kohli, Rakul Preet Singh, Serah Singh, Dev Sharma, and Nicole Faria. The second part features Divya Khosla Kumar, Meezaan Jaffrey, and Pearl V Puri in lead roles. However, the film has already faced backlash due to a controversial scene.
  • The song “Saure Ghar” in the film features actor Meezaan Jaffrey wearing a kirpan, a religious weapon worn by Sikhs. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has expressed its displeasure with the scene and warned the makers of legal action if the scene is not deleted. The SGPC has also requested the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Indian government to remove the scene and the song from YouTube.
  • SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has criticized the inclusion of the kirpan in the film, stating that the actor is shown wearing the weapon while having a clean-shaven head. He has emphasized that if the scene is not removed, it would hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community, leading to legal consequences.
  • “Yaariyan 2” is directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru and is scheduled to release on October 20, 2023.
