Modi Government has the power to change the roles of governors in several states before the Lok Sabha elections. According to sources, some governors may be given the opportunity to take on responsibilities in other states. This includes important states like Hindi belt, North-East, and South.
As per sources from the Ministry of Home Affairs, there is a lot of speculation about the current governors taking up responsibilities in other states. However, some governors may be removed due to health reasons or transferred to less significant states from important ones.
Recently, the Governor of Punjab, Banwarilal Purohit, met with Prime Minister Modi. Anandiben Patel has served as the governor in these three states. She has been the sole governor in the Modi government since 2014, even after the end of her tenure. Anandiben Patel was appointed as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh in 2018 and was given additional charge as the Governor of Chhattisgarh from August 5, 2018, to July 28, 2019. Later, she was appointed as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Anandiben Patel has been serving as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh since July 9, 2019.
The Modi government is likely to make changes in the role of governors in various states before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After the massive victory of the BJP in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, there is speculation about the reshuffling of some governors. The role of governors has been a topic of discussion lately, especially due to the recent violence in Manipur. The Governor of Manipur, Najma Heptulla, came under scrutiny from opposition parties. Similarly, the decisions made by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, R.N. Ravi, were criticized. These incidents have led to criticism of both the governors and the central government.
Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Modi government is preparing plans based on political gains and losses and the geography of states. Opposition parties had questioned the decision of Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit, which was later advised by the Supreme Court to keep the governor’s position within the purview. The High Court had directed Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit to decide on the bills passed by the assembly during the ‘constitutionally valid’ session scheduled on June 19 and 20. A petition was filed in the Supreme Court alleging that the governor was not giving his consent to the four bills passed by the assembly.
Thus, the Modi government is strategizing and preparing plans based on political gains and losses, as well as the geography and calculations of states and parties, before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP is working towards normalizing relationships with opposition parties, especially with some parties in the South. Therefore, it is believed that some governors may be reshuffled in the coming days.
