Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the longest expressway in the country, passes through five states ★Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The expressway is surrounded by forests and rivers, and to ensure minimal impact on wildlife, five animal overpasses are being constructed. These overpasses are 500 meters long.
In Bundi, Rajasthan, five animal overpasses are being built in a 3.5 km area. This area connects Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Sawai Madhopur district to Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Bundi. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway passes through Ranthambore and Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserves, both of which are eco-sensitive zones. The construction of animal overpasses aims to ensure the safety of wildlife and their uninterrupted movement.
In Lakhari, Bundi, the construction of an animal overpass is almost complete. A tunnel has been dug with soil covering it to maintain the natural appearance. Trees will be planted to restore the forest-like look. The 8-lane road passes under this animal overpass, allowing wildlife to cross above.
To prevent wildlife from entering the expressway, animal overpasses and high walls will be constructed. Gaps of 50 to 250 meters have been left between the five animal overpasses to allow light and air to enter the expressway.
The speed of vehicles passing under the animal overpasses will be equal to the speed on the expressway, which is designed and constructed to accommodate speeds of 120 km/h. The construction of a bridge over the Chambal River, which flows through the Kota-Sawai Madhopur section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, is also progressing rapidly.
The expressway will reduce travel time from Kota and Sawai Madhopur to Jaipur, Alwar, Delhi, Mumbai, Ujjain, and Ratlam. It will take approximately 3 hours to reach Delhi from Sawai Madhopur and 9 hours to reach Mumbai.
