New Gift for Highway Drivers by Central Minister Nitin Gadkari
India’s Central Minister, Nitin Gadkari, has announced a significant new initiative for highway drivers across the country. The government is developing a new system aimed at reducing congestion and improving the overall driving experience. As part of this initiative, the minister has announced that drivers will no longer need to wait in long queues at toll plazas. The government is working towards implementing a new GPS toll system, which will eliminate the visibility of toll plazas on the road.
Pilot Project Completed
The minister informed that the pilot project for the satellite-based toll collection system on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway corridor has been successfully completed. The government is currently working on the production of automated number plates. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also initiated two pilot projects aimed at enabling the automated number plate recognition system to work without stopping vehicles.
How Will the Toll Be Deducted?
With the new GPS toll system, as soon as a vehicle crosses a toll plaza, the system will scan the vehicle’s license plate. The toll collection will then be automatically deducted from the owner’s bank account. This new system is expected to be implemented next year. The Centre is planning to introduce a new system for toll tax collection next year, with plans to implement a GPS-based toll collection system on highways and expressways.
Reduced Traffic Congestion with GPS-Based Toll System
Nitin Gadkari stated that the implementation of the GPS-based toll system will lead to reduced traffic congestion on highways. Additionally, the amount of toll tax will be dependent on the actual distance travelled by the vehicles.
