Potential DA Hike for Government Employees in Madhya Pradesh
The new year could bring double joy for government employees in Madhya Pradesh. The Mohan Yadav government may grant a gift of a four percent Dearness Allowance (DA) to over seven lakh regular employees in the state. At present, the state employees receive a DA at a rate of 42 percent.
Central Government Increases DA to 46 Percent
The Modi government has already increased the DA for its employees by four percent to 46 percent, effective from July 2023. A decision could not be made due to the model code of conduct of the state assembly elections. The state government had sent a proposal to the Election Commission via the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, but instructions were given to hold it until after the elections.
Decision Pending Post-Elections
The matter has been pending since the elections. Sources said the finance department has prepared a proposal and sent it to the Chief Minister’s office for final decision. The central government may increase the DA once again in January. It should be noted that the DA is increased every January and July.
Provision for DA Payment at 56 Percent Rate
The finance department has provided for a 56 percent DA for 2024-2025. All government departments have been directed to include a three percent wage increase and a 56 percent DA in their establishment expenses. Moreover, there will be a provision for an eight percent increase in the remuneration of contractual employees. Before the assembly elections, the Shivraj government had increased the salaries and allowances of contractual employees.
Approval to be sought from Chhattisgarh Government
After the decision to increase the DA, approval will also be sought from the Chhattisgarh government for an increase in the cost of living relief for pensioners. Departmental officials say that under section 49 of the State Reorganization Act, an agreement between the two states is necessary for an increase in cost of living relief, as both states contribute to the payment made to pre-division employees.
