Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has reported another incident of theft in the Paradip-Haldia-Barauni crude oil pipeline near Jamtara. The pipeline, which has a capacity of 20.4 million metric tonnes and spans 1965 km, transports crude oil from Paradip in Odisha to Haldia in West Bengal and Barauni in Bihar. The thieves, who used drills to access the pipeline, stole crude oil worth lakhs of rupees. The police have seized equipment used in the theft, including pipes, drills, and other materials. IOCL has filed a complaint with the police.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. In the past, there have been several cases of theft in the Haldia-Barauni pipeline. In one incident, unknown thieves drilled into the pipeline at Chain Number 258.78 and stole oil by attaching valves. The pipeline is currently undergoing repairs. Similar incidents of theft have occurred in 2007, 2017, and 2022. In 2017, thieves in Dum Dumee, within the Nala police station area, tampered with the pipeline and stole oil. The pipeline was also tampered with in Pahargoda and Sudrakshipur in an attempt to steal oil.
The police are currently investigating the case and trying to identify the group of thieves involved. IOCL has reported that theft occurred in the Bahiyar area of Sudrakshipur village, where the pipeline was tampered with. Preliminary investigations are underway, and the police are working to apprehend the culprits.
