Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, is currently under scrutiny by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). After receiving a final summons from the ED, Soren wrote a letter to the investigating agency. According to media reports, Soren has made several allegations against the ED in the letter. He stated that the summons issued to him is completely illegal, as he has already provided a complete account of his assets. Soren criticized the media for conducting a trial without proper evidence and accused the ED of trying to destabilize the Jharkhand government.
This is the seventh summons issued to Soren by the ED. He has previously been summoned six times but has not appeared before the agency. Babulal Marandi, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), commented on Soren’s summons, saying that he believes the actions of the ED are justified. If Soren does not have time to visit the ED office, they can come and investigate where he is present. Marandi emphasized that Soren should not flee from the investigation and should be present when summoned, as he claims to be a revolutionary’s son.
The investigation by the ED is related to illegal changes in land ownership by land mafias in Jharkhand. So far, 14 people have been arrested in connection with the case, including Chavi Ranjan, an IAS officer from the 2011 batch, who has held positions as the Director of the State Social Welfare Department and the Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi.
There is intense speculation about a change in the Chief Minister’s face in Jharkhand. The BJP has claimed that the current Chief Minister can appoint his wife as the Chief Minister. A BJP delegation will soon meet with the Governor of Jharkhand, CP Radhakrishnan, to request legal advice from experts and the Attorney General if the Soren government proposes to appoint his wife as his successor.
A meeting of the legislative party has been called by the JMM on Wednesday amidst speculations about Kalpana Soren becoming the Chief Minister. The BJP has claimed that Gandeo MLA Sarfraz Ahmed has already resigned. In such a case, the JMM can contest elections from there. However, Soren has denied the possibility of appointing his wife as the Chief Minister.
