Efforts to Stop Illegal Sand Mining in Bihar
Illegal sand mining has always been a high-profile issue in Bihar. Despite efforts to stop the illegal mining and extraction of sand, the problem persists. In many cases, the issue of illegal sand mining escalates into violent conflicts. The state government has made attempts to address these incidents and crackdown on government revenue evasion. In this direction, the government has announced the auction of sand mines once again, with a declared date for e-auction.
E-Auction of Sand Mines in Bihar
The auction of sand mines in Bihar will begin this month, with a specified date set by the government. E-auction of sand mines will be conducted for 200 new sand mines before January 15, 2024. It is interesting to note that auctioning has already taken place for 267 sand mines in 29 districts, but sand mining is currently only being carried out in 60 mines. There is no mining happening in 207 mines. Approval has been sought for sand mining from more than 200 sand mines. It is reported that a public hearing has already been conducted for the 200 sand mines.
Instructions to Address Pending Auctions
The Department of Mines and Geology has instructed the Mineral Development Officers of the districts to make amendments in the district survey reports for the sand mines that have been left out of the auction process. After making the necessary modifications, the auction process should be completed. District officers have also been warned that if mining does not start from the auctioned mines without any valid reason, action will be taken against them.
