Sultanaganj, located in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar, is known for its production of chura (flattened rice). The aroma of chura spreads far and wide in the Abjuganj area of Sultanaganj, where chura is made and sold. Approximately 100,000 kilograms of chura is produced here every day, with the help of around 10 mills. The chura made here is sent for sale in various districts of Bihar and Jharkhand.
The production and sale of chura see a significant boost during the festival of Makar Sankranti. Around 100,000 kilograms of chura is prepared daily, with each mill producing an average of one ton of chura. During the months of December and January, when the demand for chura is high, a large number of laborers are employed to meet the production requirements. More than 10,000 tons of chura are made available in the market during this festival season.
The chura made in Sultanaganj is highly sought after, with even the President and the Prime Minister of India consuming the famous Katarani chura from Bhagalpur. The production of chura has provided employment opportunities to thousands of families in the region. Farmers from Munger, Banka, and Lakhisarai districts come to Sultanaganj to make chura from paddy. Previously, paddy was used to make rice using traditional methods, but with the establishment of rice mills, the demand for paddy decreased, leading to a shift towards chura production.
The Abjuganj Rice Millers Association has played a crucial role in promoting the chura industry. The government has also taken steps to improve the availability of quality chura in the market, which has further boosted the production of chura in the region. However, more support and facilities are required from the government to help farmers and traders involved in the chura business. Improved transportation facilities, such as increased train services, and the development of a comprehensive plan for the industry are necessary to ensure the growth and success of the chura business in Sultanaganj and the entire Bhagalpur district.
