Neeraj Kumar/ Begusarai: The farming methods in Bihar are changing, with fewer farmers opting for traditional crop systems and turning towards vegetable farming. Although the number of farmers practicing this method is low, those who have adopted it are earning good profits. Despite the small number, these successful farmers are being recognized as progressive farmers. The government is also appealing to farmers to embrace modern farming techniques. Geeta Devi, a farmer from Dandari block in Begusarai district, Bihar, has demonstrated the benefits of vegetable farming. She earns a daily income from cultivating vegetables on a 40-kattha plot.

Geeta Devi revealed that she was watching a TV program called “Anndata” (Food Provider), which showcased how women can earn a substantial income through vegetable farming. It showed how multiple varieties of vegetables can be cultivated together in the same field to achieve good profits. Inspired by this, Geeta started cultivating green vegetables on three plots, totaling 40 katthas. She mentioned that she only focuses on vegetable farming throughout the year, growing vegetables like sponge gourd, bottle gourd, brinjal, tomato, and Indian spinach, among others.

Geeta earns around three thousand rupees daily from vegetable farming. She revealed that every morning, she calls several local markets to inquire about vegetable prices. Based on the market with the highest prices, she sends her vegetables there. Geeta mentioned that eggplant farming requires the most effort, with a daily expenditure of around 500 rupees. However, she sells the vegetables in the market for 3000 to 4000 rupees. Currently, tomatoes, okra, and eggplants fetch good prices in the market. Tomatoes are sold for more than 40 rupees per kilogram. As a result, farmers in the district are increasingly turning towards tomato farming.
