Madhepura’s Deep Connection with Karpoori Thakur
The announcement by the central government to award Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, posthumously to former Chief Minister Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur has generated significant discussion not only in Bihar but throughout the country. Karpoori Thakur was known for his continuous efforts to empower the marginalized and oppressed communities. Madhepura had a deep connection with Karpoori Thakur, evident from the presence of a Karpoori Chowk and a medical college named after him in the city. His visits to the homes of former MP Bhupendra Narayan Mandal and former MLA Radhakant Yadav were also frequent during the 1980s.
Deep Affection for Karpoori Thakur in Madhepura
Renowned educationist and writer Dr. Bhupendra Yadav, a native of Madhepura, highlights the deep affection that the people of Madhepura had for Karpoori Thakur. During the 1980s, Karpoori Thakur had visited Madhepura several times. He would often visit the homes of then sitting MLA Radhakant Yadav, MP Bhupendra Narayan Mandal, and advocate Kamlesh Bhaduri. He would also have meals at the homes of the poor residing in the slums of the city. Dr. Yadav recalls having personally met Karpoori Thakur multiple times and even feeding him, mentioning that Karpoori Thakur had a fondness for non-vegetarian food.
Historical Significance of Karpoori Thakur in Madhepura
In the 1955 by-elections, Madhepura and Saharsa were part of the Bhagalpur, Purnia Lok Sabha constituency. Karpoori Thakur himself served as the election agent for J.B. Kripalani during that election. Since then, Karpoori Thakur had a close association with Madhepura. In 1992, a square in Madhepura was named Karpoori Chowk in his honor. The city also houses the Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Medical College and Hospital, further solidifying his historical significance in Madhepura.
