Newly elected Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, took oath on Sunday evening. While the BJP, JDU, and HAM got ministerial positions through quotas, there was also a face that made it to the list of ministers despite being an independent candidate. We are talking about MLA Sumit Kumar Singh, who, even after being an independent candidate, was included in Nitish Kumar’s team.
On one hand, where Janata Dal United leader Nitish Kumar took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the ninth time, on the other hand, independent MLA Sumit Kumar Singh from the Chakai assembly constituency in Jamui district also took oath as a minister for the third time. In the Bihar Assembly elections 2020, Sumit Kumar Singh was elected as an independent candidate from the Chakai assembly constituency. Before entering the electoral field as an independent candidate in the 2020 elections, Sumit Kumar Singh was a worker of the JDU, but after being denied a ticket by the JDU, he contested as an independent candidate and emerged victorious.
After winning the elections, MLA Sumit Kumar Singh showed his trust in Nitish Kumar and extended his support to him. He also became a minister in the NDA government formed in 2020. Later, when Nitish Kumar formed a government in Bihar with the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan, independent MLA Sumit Kumar Singh joined Nitish Kumar’s cabinet and took oath as a minister. After leaving the 18-month-long Mahagathbandhan government, when Nitish Kumar took oath as the Chief Minister of the NDA government on January 28, 2024, independent MLA Sumit Kumar Singh took oath as a minister for the third time after him.
In 2010, in the Bihar Assembly elections, Sumit Kumar Singh contested from the Chakai constituency on the ticket of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, in which he emerged victorious and supported the NDA government and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. It is worth mentioning that Sumit Kumar Singh is the son of late Kaddavar minister Narendra Singh. Narendra Singh had also served as a minister in the cabinet of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi. Narendra Singh also remained a part of Nitish Kumar’s cabinet. LJP’s state president Narendra Singh had supported Nitish Kumar in 2005 by breaking the legislators of Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party.
Sumit Kumar Singh’s elder brother, late Abhay Singh, has previously been a JDU MLA from the Jamui constituency. After taking oath as a minister for the third time, there was an atmosphere of enthusiasm among his supporters. The atmosphere of joy was also seen in Sumit’s ancestral village, where drums and colors were seen amidst the distribution of sweets. Sumit’s supporters also visited the Bajrangbali temple and performed prayers and rituals.
