Changing Perceptions about Farming
People often believe that agriculture and related businesses do not yield much profit. However, this perception is changing. Farmers can now incorporate advanced technology to not only earn a good income but also live a better life. Many examples can be found around us where young individuals have left high-paying jobs to pursue farming and are earning substantial profits. Shahnavaz Ahmad, a young farmer from Naripa village in Bihar’s Banka district, is one such example. He has abandoned his job in the merchant navy to start a fish farming business and is now earning well. He is also making profits through horticulture.
Transition to Fish Farming
Shahnavaz Ahmad recalls how some birds break down when confined to cages. Similarly, some people confine themselves to jobs for their entire lives. He had a deep interest in agriculture since childhood but did not find the right environment to integrate technology into farming and related businesses. During his time in the merchant navy, he often traveled to countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam, where commercial fish farming was prevalent and profitable.
A Successful Venture
After realizing that traditional fish farming in his country was not profitable, Shahnavaz Ahmad decided to start commercial fish farming during the 2021 lockdown. He dug 11 ponds in five acres and developed six large ponds and five nursery ponds. He now earns over 12 lakh rupees annually through fish farming. Initially, he started with six large ponds for raising five different types of fish, including Rohu, Catla, and Seelan. He also established five nurseries where he imports spawn from Bengal and sells fingerlings and yearlings. With a selling price of 3 rupees per piece, he earns a good profit.
