Bihar’s air quality has reached the red zone in a dozen cities. Bhagalpur and Saharsa have the most polluted air out of 245 cities in the country. For the first time, the air quality of 12 cities in Bihar, including Patna, has been categorized as very poor. Cities like Hajipur, Samastipur, and Aurangabad also have very poor air quality. The AQI of Bhagalpur was recorded as 432, Saharsa as 408, and Patna as 358. The air quality of Gandhi Maidan in Patna was the most polluted with an AQI of 454, followed by Samanpura with an AQI of 430.

The air pollution situation remained severe in Bhagalpur district on Wednesday. The maximum Air Quality Index (AQI) in the district was recorded as 432. The level of particulate matter in the air was 15 times higher than normal. Increasing air pollution is adversely affecting the health of people, especially those suffering from respiratory, heart, and allergy-related diseases. The areas of Maya Ganj and Kachahari Chowk in the city are the most polluted.

In the list of the 100 most polluted cities in the country, Bhagalpur was ranked 98th, with Delhi being the most polluted city. The main cause of pollution is the high concentration of fine dust and pollutants in the air. Often, polluted air from metropolitan cities reaches eastern Bihar when the wind direction changes. In the surrounding areas of Bhagalpur, like Barauni, Baad, and Kahalgaon, pollution levels are increasing due to emissions from thermal power plants.

The concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 particles in the air of several cities in Bihar has increased due to construction activities not strictly following pollution guidelines. However, pollution control experts say that small pollutants do not get cleared in the morning due to dew, resulting in very poor air quality.
