Agriculture in various districts of Bihar, including Samastipur, is witnessing large-scale cultivation of vegetables. This is mainly due to the fact that vegetable farming requires less effort and investment, while providing better profits. As a result, farmers are shifting towards this crop. Shivnath Rai, a farmer from Chakjalal village in Halya OP area of Samastipur district, has been growing vegetables continuously for the past 30 years. Currently, he is cultivating brinjal and pointed gourd in his 2-acre field, earning more than 600,000 rupees annually.
Previously, Shivnath Rai used to cultivate wheat and maize on a large scale, but it required waiting for 6 months for the crops to be ready. Due to this, he switched to vegetable farming, which is considered a cash crop. He compared vegetable farming to an ATM for farmers, as they can sell the crops in the market and receive cash whenever they need it. This is why vegetable farming can be considered as an ATM for farmers.
Shivnath Rai also mentioned that the income from growing pointed gourd and okra is much higher. However, he expressed concerns about the increasing problems caused by wild animals. If the government resolves this issue, the income from his 2-acre fields would increase by 600,000 rupees. Currently, wild animals are causing damage to the ready crops. He also mentioned that the price of brinjal has decreased from 20-25 rupees per kilogram to 15-16 rupees per kilogram. Despite this, he is able to produce 5-6 quintals of brinjal every four days and around one quintal of pointed gourd every 10 days.
बिहार के कई जिलों में सब्जी की खेती एवं बड़े पैमाने पर हो रही है। इसका मुख्य कारण है कि एक सीजन में कम मेहनत और कम लागत पर यह बेहतर मुनाफा देती है। इसलिए किसान अब इस और ज्यादा रुख कर रहें हैं। समस्तीपुर जिला के हलई ओपी क्षेत्र के चकजलाल गांव के रहने वाले किसान शिवनाथ राय बताते हैं कि पिछले 30 वर्षों से लगातार सब्जी की खेती करते हैं। वर्तमान समय में उन्होंने 2 एकड़ खेत में बैगन और परवल उगा रहें हैं। प्रतिवर्ष 6 लाख से अधिक रुपए का मुनाफा कमा लेते हैं। शिवनाथ राय ने कहा कि पूर्व में वे गेहूं और मक्का की खेती करते थे, लेकिन उक्त फसल तैयार होने में 6 महीने तक इंतजार करना पड़ता था। इसलिए वे अब सब्जी की खेती कर रहें हैं जो नगद आमदनी वाली खेती मानी जाती है। उन्होंने बताया कि जंगली जानवर उनकी फसलों को नुकसान पहुंचा रहे हैं और अगर सरकार इस समस्या को दूर कर देती है तो उनकी कमाई में इजाफा हो सकता है। उन्होंने बताया कि उनकी बैगन की कीमतों में कमी हो रही है और उत्पादन भी कम हो रहा है। परवल की बात करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि वे प्रतिवर्ष एक क्विंटल से ज्यादा परवल का उत्पादन करते हैं।
