The story of Mina Devi, a resident of a remote rural area in Begusarai, Bihar, can be an inspiration for women who aspire to achieve something in life. Mina Devi’s Journey to Success
Mina Devi, the wife of Ramashish Mahato from Bariyarpur village in Gadhpara block of Begusarai, revealed in a local interview that she did not have any land. Her in-laws could not do anything special by doing vegetable farming at a small scale. However, they used to talk about the possibility of earning good income from vegetables. In such a situation, Mina took 2 beeghas of land from the village landlords in 5 installments for a total of 50 thousand rupees and started farming. In the initial days, she availed the benefits of government schemes and installed drip irrigation technique in her fields, which reduced the cost of irrigation. She then started cultivating three to four types of vegetables in all her fields simultaneously.
Mina Devi’s Achievements
Mina started farming on 15 kathas of land and gradually expanded it to 40 kathas. She revealed that many vegetable traders, including small cart vendors, come here every two to three days to buy vegetables. The production of vegetables is also improving. She mentioned that by selling only two types of cauliflower, tomatoes, chili, coriander, etc., she can earn up to 3 to 5 thousand rupees. On the other hand, by selling papaya and potatoes once a year, she can use the income for home construction, buying land, or even her daughter’s wedding. Now, Mina Devi does not have to depend on anyone to fulfill her household needs. She wants to further expand her vegetable farming to increase her income.
