India is witnessing a rapid increase in the use of electric vehicles, with the central and Delhi governments encouraging the use of green energy vehicles. In line with this, plans are underway to introduce electric buses on a large scale. As part of this initiative, an electric highway is being constructed in Delhi, which will be the first of its kind in the country. In the coming years, electric buses will run on this highway at a speed of 100 km per hour. Currently, this may seem like a fictional concept, but it is indeed a reality.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is working towards creating the country’s first electric-enabled highway. Under this project, electric buses will be available on the Delhi-Jaipur highway within the next six years. These buses will run a distance of 225 km between Delhi and Jaipur, with a seating capacity of 55 passengers and a maximum speed of 100 km per hour. Work is also underway on a prototype of a 95-seater bus that will connect both buses.
An electric highway, also known as an electric-enabled highway, is a road where all types of electric vehicles can operate. This highway offers several amenities to customers using electric vehicles, including EV charging infrastructure similar to petrol stations, battery swapping machines, and other facilities. Charging points will also be available at short distances along this highway to charge electric vehicles.
As part of the electric highway project, there will be a dedicated lane for electric vehicles on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. This lane will have electricity lines to provide power to electric buses and trucks. The project is being planned under the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) scheme, and companies like Tata and Siemens have shown interest in it. Electric highway buses and trucks will be separate from regular electric vehicles, as they will not run on battery power. Instead, these buses will receive a continuous supply of electricity, eliminating the need for recharging.
Similar to trains and metros, the electric highway will have electricity lines installed above it to supply power to vehicles. These lines will provide electricity to vehicles on the highway, making it a smooth and efficient mode of transportation.
Implementing the electric bus plan will not only save fuel but also have a positive impact on traffic. These dedicated buses will ensure that passengers reach their destinations on time. Several European countries, including Sweden and Germany, have successfully implemented similar bus systems, reducing traffic congestion on their roads.
