Struggle of Rajendra Kushth Seva Ashram
Ankit Kumar Singh from Siwan, Bihar, talks about the Rajendra Kushth Seva Ashram, where people affected by leprosy used to get treatment and work to sustain themselves. However, due to lack of support and funding, the ashram is now struggling to provide for hundreds of families who used to rely on it for help. Despite its importance in the past, the ashram is now facing a crisis.
Foundation and Decline
Established in 1953 in Mirwa, the Rajendra Kushth Seva Ashram gained popularity nationwide within a few years. It had research and training centers along with small industries for the recovered patients. However, after the funding from the central government stopped in 1992, the 200-bed hospital faced a crisis. Today, over 200 leprosy patients are left without proper support, living on begging for their survival.
Call for Revival
The local residents, like Mohan Varanwal, are demanding the revival of the industries in the ashram to provide employment opportunities for the patients. Despite being closed for decades, the ashram still houses hundreds of patients in dire conditions. The plea is for the government to step in and restart the industries to uplift the lives of these marginalized individuals.
