Impact of Extreme Heat on Farmers in Sitamarhi, Bihar

The district of Sitamarhi in Bihar is currently experiencing extreme heat, leading to significant losses for farmers. The intense sunlight and dry winds have caused vegetable plants to wither and dry up, affecting the overall yield. Farmers are now having to irrigate their fields daily to preserve moisture, resulting in increased expenses.

Challenges Faced by Vegetable Farmers

Farmers from Gajipur in Uttar Pradesh come to Sitamarhi to cultivate vegetables on a large scale. However, this year, the produce is not reaching markets like Muzaffarpur due to the drying up of the vegetables. The excessive heat has hindered the growth of vegetables like lauki, parwal, and kaddu, impacting the livelihood of farmers in the region.

Financial Strain on Farmers

The lack of moisture in the soil has made it difficult for farmers to cultivate vegetables, leading to additional costs for irrigation. Farmers like Rajkumar Bind are now forced to take loans to pay the hefty fees for borewell irrigation, further straining their financial situation. With land not retaining moisture and the high cost of cultivation, farmers in Sitamarhi are facing significant challenges this season.
