**Champaran Satyagraha: A Historical Movement**

On April 15, 1917, Mahatma Gandhi took a significant step in Champaran. He stayed there until June 12, meeting with farmers and raising his voice against the British. This marked the beginning of the Satyagraha movement against the exploitation of indigo farmers. The movement spread throughout the country, shaking the roots of the British rule. Known as the Champaran Satyagraha, this movement brought Champaran to the attention of not just the nation, but the world.

Following Independence, the Champaran Lok Sabha seat was dominated by the Congress party. However, after the Emergency, Thakur Ramapati Singh won the elections from the Janata Party. Subsequently, in 1989, Radha Mohan Singh from the BJP won the seat. He continued to win in the elections of 1996, 1999, 2014, and 2019. In 1998, Rama Devi won the elections on a ticket from the RJD. The upcoming elections see Rajesh Kushwaha, a candidate from the VIP, entering the political arena.

At present, ‘Amar Ujala’s’ election chariot ‘Satta Ka Sangram’ is in Bihar, engaging with people in Motihari of East Champaran as part of its pre-planned program. People are being asked about their thoughts while sipping tea at Hari Ji’s shop. Along with a sip of tea, voters in the East Champaran Lok Sabha constituency discussed various issues such as the city’s development, traffic, water management, and employment.
