Honda, one of the major two-wheeler manufacturers in India, is planning to launch an affordable electric scooter in the country. While all major two-wheeler manufacturers have already launched their electric scooters in India, Honda is yet to make an entry in the electric segment. The company has already launched ‘Honda U-Go electric scooter’ in China and has now registered its patent in India. The Honda U-Go can become the first affordable electric scooter in India.
The Honda U-Go electric scooter has been launched in two variants in China ★the top variant and the standard variant. Both variants come with a 1.44 kWh 48V and 30Ah removable lithium-ion battery. The top variant comes with a motor generating a maximum output of 1.8 kW and a top speed of 53 km/h. The standard variant comes with a motor generating a maximum output of 1 kW and a top speed of 45 km/h.
The Honda U-Go electric scooter has a range of 65 km on a single charge. The battery can be removed from the scooter in both models, which allows customers to charge it conveniently at home. Both battery packs can be used to extend the range up to 130 km. The Honda U-Go is expected to be cheaper than its Chinese counterpart in India due to the subsidies provided by the government. The expected price range of the scooter is between INR 60,000 to INR 70,000.
Honda’s foray into the affordable electric scooter segment in India will further boost the adoption of electric vehicles in the country. With the growing concern for air pollution and the government’s push towards electric mobility, the demand for electric vehicles is expected to increase. Honda’s entry into the segment will also intensify the competition among the two-wheeler manufacturers in India.
