Drug trafficking in Jharkhand is on the rise, with a continuous increase in the trade of opium, heroin, marijuana, and other drugs. The High Court took cognizance of the matter and conducted a hearing on the issue. The Court criticized the police officers in the state for not taking strict action against those involved in the drug trade. Under the chairmanship of Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad, the bench passed orders stating that laxity by police officers in curbing drug trade will result in severe consequences.
The Court warned that if police officers turn a blind eye to the buying and selling of drugs in the state, they will face strict action. Failure to prevent drug trafficking in a particular area and lack of action against police officers in the concerned police station could lead to the Court passing stringent orders against the SP/SSP of that district. The CID DIG had submitted an affidavit stating that discussions had taken place between the state government and the Narcotics Control Bureau regarding curbing drug trafficking, leading to the formulation of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
However, the bench expressed dissatisfaction with the SOP for not addressing the steps to be taken against accused police officers. The responsibility of holding accountable the police officers who have failed in curbing drug trafficking was not clearly defined in the SOP. The Court highlighted the need to determine the accountability of police officers who have not been successful in preventing drug trade. The lack of clarity on this issue in the SOP was a cause for concern.
In Short, the High Court’s strict orders against lax police officers in curbing drug trafficking in Jharkhand indicate a zero-tolerance approach towards the drug trade. The Court emphasized the importance of holding accountable those responsible for allowing drug trafficking to thrive in the state. Moving forward, it is crucial for law enforcement agencies to take proactive measures to effectively combat the drug menace and ensure a safer environment for the citizens of Jharkhand.
