Impact of Viral Leaf Curl and Fungal Root Rot Diseases on Papaya Plants in Bihar

The viral leaf curl and fungal root rot diseases are causing significant damage to papaya plants in Bihar, posing a threat to the livelihoods of farmers. These diseases are currently prevalent in papaya fields at universities and many farmers’ orchards. It is important for farmers to identify the symptoms of these diseases and effectively manage them to prevent further damage. This information has been provided by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Head of the Plant Disease Department at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa.

Symptoms and Spread of Diseases in Papaya Plants

Dr. Rajendra Prasad explained that the expressions of viral leaf curl disease are particularly evident on the leaves. The affected leaves appear small and curled, with distortion and yellowing occurring on their veins. These clear signs serve as the main symptoms of this disease. He also mentioned how, after infection, papaya leaves bend downwards like an inverted cup, resulting in reduced flower production and stunted plant growth. The spread of leaf curling disease in papaya orchards is caused by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, which feeds on infected sap, acquires the virus, and transmits it to healthy leaves.

Management and Treatment of Fungal Root Rot Disease

According to agricultural experts, the presence of fungal root rot disease in papaya plants leads to the gradual deterioration of leaves, causing them to turn yellow, wither, and fall prematurely to the ground. The destructive root rot disease rapidly destroys the roots of plants as they begin to decay. Farmers are advised to immediately spray a solution of Hexaconazole, a fungicide, around papaya plants and their roots if they notice any symptoms of root rot in their orchards. It is recommended to repeat this treatment every 15 days for effective management and prevention of the disease.
