Papaya Cultivation in Various States

Papaya cultivation is mainly done in states like Bihar, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. The best part about papaya cultivation is that it can be done throughout the year, with experts suggesting that it can be grown at temperatures ranging from 15 to 45 degrees Celsius. In Bihar’s West Champaran district, farmers cultivate various papaya breeds like Taiwan Red Lady 786, Honey Dew, Kurk Honey Dew, Pusa Nanha, Badwani Lal, and Badwani Yellow.

Success Stories from West Champaran

In the Majhaulia block of West Champaran district, residents like Ravi Kant Pandey, a plant expert, have been changing the game with the cultivation of Taiwan Red Lady papaya breed. With dense cultivation, up to 1280 plants can be grown per acre, and harvesting can be done within a year of planting. With each tree yielding around 80 to 170 kilograms of fruit, the potential for high earnings is significant, with some farmers earning over 30 lakh rupees easily.

Other Important Aspects of Papaya Cultivation

Apart from planting, attention to other aspects like seed quality is crucial for successful papaya production. Seeds are sown between July to September and February to March. Seedlings are transplanted into polythene bags once they reach 8-10 centimeters in length, and regular watering is essential, especially during hot summers and cold winters. Proper care and attention to detail in cultivation practices can lead to significant profits for farmers in the papaya business.
