Shams Tabrez ★The Cyber Espionage Scam
In Katihar, people were receiving calls from a paan shop claiming to be a cyber SP. The caller would meet girls through dating apps, make obscene videos with them, and then call them posing as an SP to extort money from them. Shams Tabrez, a 30-year-old man, was arrested by the police for this scam.
Modus Operandi and Arrest
Shams Tabrez, a high school graduate, learned this scam from his cousin. He would blackmail girls by posing as an SP officer and threatening to release their intimate videos. The Ministry of Home Affairs alerted the Katihar police, leading to his arrest in Jura Bagh colony.
Scam Details and Police Action
Tabrez targeted women and girls through various dating apps, extracting their numbers and posing as a cyber SP to chat with them. He would then coerce them into sending explicit videos, which he would later use to blackmail them for money. The police confiscated multiple obscene videos from his phone and discovered his involvement in similar cases in multiple states.
Family Background and Arrest
Shams Tabrez, one of nine siblings, hails from Rajora in Begusarai. After his father’s death due to COVID-19, he resorted to running a paan shop for a living. His arrest shed light on his troubled marriage, estrangement from his wife, and his descent into criminal activities, influenced by his cousin’s illicit schemes.
