Bihar’s Half Population Falling Prey to Tuberculosis Due to Desire for Zero Figure

A desire for zero figure is making half of Bihar’s population sick. In recent years, tuberculosis has been affecting not only malnourished children but also adolescents and married women at a rapid pace. Regardless of social class, the disease is becoming prevalent, showing that the desire for a zero figure (31-23-32) is taking a toll on health. Achieving a zero figure for women is not easy, and compromising on nutrition for weight loss can lead to various health issues.

Twice the Number of Cases in the Past Five Years

The rate of tuberculosis cases among the affluent population has doubled in the past five years. In Bhagalpur district alone, around 200 to 250 new cases are being detected every month. Women between the ages of 17 and 40 from well-off families are falling victim to tuberculosis due to weight loss obsession. Many cases involve drastic weight loss of 15 to 20 kilos, weakening their immune system and making them susceptible to malnutrition and tuberculosis.

Decreasing Immune Response Leading to Health Issues

Physician Dr. Vinay Kumar Jha explains that crash dieting affects digestion and can lead to malnutrition. Women who undergo rapid weight loss often experience indigestion and nausea. This not only hampers their nutritional intake but also weakens their immune system, making them more prone to tuberculosis and other diseases. Dr. Shantanu Kumar Ghosh from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital warns against extreme dieting and strenuous exercise, as it can compromise the body’s immune response and increase the risk of tuberculosis infection.
