Plan to centralize yard for seized vehicles in Bhagalpur district
Sanjeev Jha, Bhagalpur: There is a plan to create a centralized yard for seized and abandoned vehicles in police stations across the district. The Senior Police Superintendent Anand Kumar has requested the District Magistrate Dr. Naval Kishor Chaudhary for land for this purpose. A proposal for two to five acres of government land has been sent to the Home Department (Reserve Branch) by the SSP.
Efforts made to gather data
In an effort to gather accurate data on seized vehicles in police stations, former SSP Ashish Bharti had directed to prepare a report on the actual number of seized vehicles and update old records. After the transfer of SSP Ashish Bharti, the status of this directive remains unknown. The lack of proper record keeping has led to an increase in the number of seized vehicles over the years.
Request for land previously made by Secretary
A proposal to create a central yard for seized and abandoned vehicles in police stations had been made earlier. The then Secretary of the Home Department’s Reserve Branch, Jitendra Shrivastav, had written a letter to the district to provide land for this purpose. Despite efforts to find suitable land, availability remains a challenge. Following the Home Department’s directive, the SSP has written a letter to the DM regarding this matter.
Order from Patna High Court
The Patna High Court had ordered on 25.02.2022 to remove encroachments on roads in the name of seized vehicles by police stations. The court emphasized on proper storage of seized vehicles to avoid inconvenience to the public. Subsequently, the Home Department decided to create centralized yards in every district to store seized vehicles from all police stations.
