Expansion of Genetic Disease Pension Scheme in Jharkhand

As the environment undergoes rapid changes, various diseases are on the rise among people. One such genetic disease is Sickle Cell Anemia, caused by abnormal changes in genes. A pioneering initiative has been taken in Khunti district of Jharkhand to provide a monthly pension of one thousand rupees to individuals suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia. This move aims to provide financial support to those affected by this genetic disease.

Approval for Pension Distribution

On Wednesday, it was revealed that the Khunti district administration in Jharkhand has granted approval to provide pension to individuals affected by Sickle Cell Anemia under the Swami Vivekananda Disabled Self-Employment Incentive Scheme for the first time. This approval signifies a step towards supporting those impacted by genetic diseases through financial assistance.

Beneficiaries Identified

Under the leadership of District Magistrate Lokesh Mishra, the Social Security Cell in Khunti has launched a program to identify beneficiaries. Nine individuals have been identified from various blocks, including Khunti, Karra, Murhu, and Torpa. These individuals will receive financial aid of one thousand rupees per month under this scheme to help ease their economic burden.

Screening for Sickle Cell Disease

The district has already conducted screenings for 99,165 individuals for Sickle Cell disease. Out of these, 114 have been identified with Sickle Cell disease, while 46 individuals have been diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia-Thalassemia. Forty percent of these individuals, or more, who suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia-Thalassemia will receive pension under the Swami Vivekananda Disabled Self-Employment Incentive Scheme based on their disability certification.
