Protest by NTPC Workers
Under the banner of the Thermal Electricity Workers’ Union, workers at the main gate of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in Barauni staged a symbolic protest on Tuesday, signaling their demands through slogans. The contract workers at NTPC are not provided with pay slips, face verbal abuse during work, and are charged a commission of Rs. 4,000 after monthly payments. They are also laid off without any reason, leading to a demonstration with 17 demands being presented during a gate meeting.
Demands presented to NTPC Management
The workers’ union president mentioned that 17 demands have been put forward to the NTPC management. If the management does not engage in dialogue with the union and resolve the issues by August 15, all workers may be forced to go on strike. The responsibility for addressing these demands lies with the NTPC management, which is aware of all the issues faced by the workers but has not taken meaningful action to address them.
Security Measures During Protest
During the gate meeting and protest, stringent security arrangements were made, with a large number of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel and NTPC security guards deployed at the main gate. Despite the presence of security personnel, a significant number of workers vociferously protested against the NTPC management for nearly half an hour, demanding their grievances be addressed.
