Nepal Youth Rally Against Social Media Ban, Demand Freedom of Expression in Major Cities

Nepal is currently witnessing a wave of protests across the country. This started after the government decided to ban 26 social media platforms, including well-known ones like Facebook, Twitter (now X), YouTube, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The protests have erupted in various cities, including the capital, Kathmandu, and places like Viratnagar, Dharan, Birganj, and Ithari.

The reason behind this ban is that the government claims these social media companies did not register within the required time. However, many young people and citizens believe this move is an attack on their freedom of expression. As a result, there have been many violent protests, with clashes between the youth and police, along with incidents of stone pelting and arson in several areas.

The protests are primarily led by the younger generation, especially those born between 1997 and 2012, often referred to as Generation Z. These young protesters are expressing their anger and frustration over the government’s decision. School principals have stated that they will not comply with the ban, while the government insists it will not back down, highlighting growing tensions from both sides.

The unrest in Nepal has also raised concerns along the Indo-Nepal border. Movement across the border has decreased, prompting Indian security agencies to remain on high alert. Local police have been instructed to maintain vigilance as the situation in Nepal directly affects border security and relations between India and Nepal.

This ban has put the Nepal government in a difficult position, as the youth’s anger shows no signs of calming down. The Internet Services Providers Association has also raised questions about this decision. In response to the unrest, the government has even deployed the army to maintain order in the streets.
