Just before the upcoming elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone for the Kosi-Meachi link project on 15 September during his visit to Purnia. This project is considered a game-changer for Bihar, especially with the Kosi river often causing floods during the rainy season.
The Kosi-Meachi link project aims to manage excess water from the Kosi river by diverting it to the Mechi river during floods. This will not only help in controlling floods but also benefit farmers by providing them with more irrigation options.
Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary has shared that this project will boost irrigation capacity by creating an additional 2.15 lakh hectares of farmland. It also includes reviving the eastern main canal and expanding the Mechi River, which is expected to support both flood management and agricultural growth.
After a recent meeting, Union Ministers conducted an aerial survey of the project area to assess its critical aspects. They also discussed related projects like the Western Kosi Canal Revolution and the Bagmati embankment project, which are aimed at improving water management in the region.
Financial issues had previously delayed the project’s progress, but now it seems there’s a renewed push for it to move forward. With the central government stepping in, the chances of starting the project have increased, aligning with the upcoming elections and development needs in Bihar.
