Indian Railways will change passenger fares from December 2025, affecting long-distance journeys while keeping short trips safe from increases.
Indian Railways has decided to revise passenger train fares starting at the end of December 2025. This update will impact millions of travelers across the country, but short-distance journeys will remain unaffected.
For travel up to 215 kilometers, local trains, and monthly season tickets will not see any fare increases. The main changes will occur for long-distance trips, where fares will rise based on distance traveled.
Passengers traveling in general class for distances over 215 kilometers will see a small increase of one paisa per kilometer, while for express and AC classes, it will be two paisa per kilometer. This might seem minor, but it can add up over long distances.
For instance, if you travel about 1000 kilometers, you might pay an extra 10 rupees in general class and around 20 rupees more in AC class trains. Popular routes like Patna to Delhi and Patna to Mumbai will also reflect this fare hike.
In addition to the fare changes, Railways plans to operate special trains during peak times like Christmas and New Year to manage the expected passenger crowd. Overall, if you travel within 215 kilometers, you won’t see any fare changes, but longer trips will become a bit more expensive.
Summary:
- Fare changes will start from December 2025.
- No increase for journeys up to 215 kilometers.
- Long-distance fares will rise by one or two paisa per kilometer.
- Extra charges on popular routes like Patna to Delhi and Mumbai.
- Special trains will be added for busy seasons.
