The railway officials are clear about their goal with this fare hike. They want to enhance services without putting too much financial pressure on regular travelers. Notably, the increase is quite nominal, indicating a careful approach to balancing service improvements and affordability.
For regular commuters and those traveling short distances, there’s good news. Fares for Suburban Services and Monthly Season Tickets will not see any increase. Additionally, if you travel up to 215 kilometers in General Class, your fare will remain unchanged, which is a relief for many daily travelers.
On the other hand, there is a slight fare increase for long-distance and AC travel. For journeys longer than 215 kilometers, the fare will rise by just one paise per kilometer. In the sleeper and AC classes of mail and express trains, the increase is only two paise per kilometer. For example, a 500-kilometer journey will only cost you an extra Rs 10.
The railway administration emphasizes that this fare revision is necessary for future improvements in train hygiene, safety, and modernization. The new rates will be effective for both online and counter ticket bookings from tonight.
