In 2025, Indian Railways made significant strides by launching several projects to connect tough terrains, like the first vertical lift bridge in Pamban, Tamil Nadu, and the highest rail bridge over the Chenab river for Kashmir.
This year also saw the opening of the Birabi-Sairang line, which finally connected Mizoram with the rest of India. In total, the Ministry of Railways launched 42 new projects worth over Rs 25,000 crore.
Passengers can look forward to improved services, as the railways introduced 15 new Vande Bharat Express trains, bringing the total to 164. Special trains also ran during peak travel times, with 43,000 trips made for festivals.
Safety improved with a drop in train accidents, down to 11 this year, and more than 900 km of new tracks were added. The ministry also focused on upgrading 1,337 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Looking ahead, Indian Railways plans to launch the first Vande Bharat Sleeper service for AC class passengers. The freight operations are also set to grow, with two new Dedicated Freight Corridors now in operation.
