What’s inside:

This article informs about the upcoming strict changes in traffic rules regarding challans, including penalties for unpaid fines.

The central government is planning to tighten traffic rules for all vehicle owners. If you ignore your traffic challan, there could be serious consequences. New rules are being drafted that may lead to cancellation of vehicle registration and even suspension of driving licenses for unpaid challans.

According to the proposed changes, traffic challans will now be issued more quickly. You will receive a manual challan within 15 days or an online (e-challan) within 3 days. After getting the challan, you will have 45 days to pay the fine or challenge it online. If you don’t act within this time, the challan will automatically be accepted.

The new rules are particularly tough on those who have unpaid challans. If you have outstanding fines, all services related to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) will be halted. This means you won’t be able to renew your vehicle registration or driving license until you pay your dues.

Repeat offenders will face even harsher penalties. If you don’t pay your challan within three months, your driving license could be suspended. If you get more than three challans for serious violations like jumping a red light in a year, your license might be taken away for at least three months.

The government is worried about the low recovery rate of fines. Currently, only 40% of challans are paid, with even lower rates in cities like Delhi and Karnataka. Moving forward, if you believe a challan is wrong, you can challenge it online, and if the authority doesn’t respond in 30 days, the challan will be considered invalid.

Summary:

  • New traffic rules are being introduced for challans.

  • Challans will be issued faster, with strict deadlines for payment.

  • Services will be halted for those with unpaid fines.

  • Heavy penalties for repeat traffic offenders are being implemented.

  • Low recovery rates have raised concerns for the government.
