Modi to Launch India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, Boosting Connectivity from Guwahati to Howrah on January 17

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train on January 17, 2026. This train will run from Guwahati (Kamakhya) to Howrah, marking a significant milestone in Indian railway history. Along with improving rail connectivity, this move is also seen as a political strategy to strengthen the government’s presence in Eastern and North-Eastern India.

The launch event will take place at Malda Town Railway Station. The new train is designed to be modern and comfortable, making long-distance travel faster and safer. It is expected to reduce travel time by around two and a half hours, boosting tourism and business in the region.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will also announce several infrastructure projects worth over Rs 3,250 crore. These projects aim to enhance connectivity between West Bengal and the North-Eastern states. Modi will hold a public meeting in Malda to share details and promote the development initiatives.

Additionally, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation for various railway projects, including a new railway line and a freight maintenance facility at New Jalpaiguri. He will also inaugurate the electrification of certain railway sections, further advancing the region’s railway infrastructure.

On January 18, Modi will virtually flag off four new Amrit Bharat Express trains to improve connectivity across the country. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to develop railways and enhance transportation efficiency, reflecting the government’s focus on development-centric politics.
