India is moving towards a major transformation in its energy sector with a target of 1.8 to 2 TW renewable capacity by 2047. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has updated guidelines to promote hybrid inverters under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This move allows households to install systems with battery storage while availing government subsidies.

Understanding the Subsidy Structure

The government offers financial assistance to reduce the installation burden on homeowners. The subsidy is calculated based on the capacity of the solar system.

System Capacity Subsidy Amount
Up to 2 kW Rs 30,000 per kW
3 kW and above Fixed Rs 78,000

New Quality Standards from 2026

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has introduced mandatory standards for solar inverters. From January 1, 2026, all on-grid inverters must meet specific efficiency ratings and carry a BEE star label. This ensures that consumers get high-quality and safe equipment for their homes.

Why Hybrid Inverters Are Essential

Hybrid inverters are designed to work with both the power grid and battery backups. Unlike standard inverters that shut down during power cuts, hybrid systems ensure a continuous power supply. The inclusion of these inverters in the subsidy scheme encourages energy independence for Indian households.
