The Central Government has brought major relief to commuters traveling on National Highways across India. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has amended the National Highways Fee Rules, introducing a massive discount of up to 70 percent on toll taxes. This decision is aimed at reducing the financial burden on vehicle owners traveling on roads that are currently undergoing expansion or upgradation work.
New Discount Rules for Highway Upgrades
According to the latest notification, a significant relaxation has been provided for two-lane highways that are being upgraded to four lanes or more. During the construction period of such projects, the government will collect only 30 percent of the standard toll fee. This means that travelers will receive a direct benefit of a 70 percent discount until the construction work is fully completed.
Relief for Widening 4-Lane Roads
The ministry has also issued specific guidelines for wider highways. If an existing four-lane highway is being expanded to six or eight lanes, commuters will not have to pay the full toll. In such cases, the toll collection will be restricted to 75 percent of the standard rate, offering a 25 percent discount to the users during the construction phase.
Quick Look at New Rates
| Highway Type | Toll to Pay | Discount |
|---|---|---|
| 2-Lane to 4-Lane Upgrade | 30% | 70% |
| 4-Lane to 6/8-Lane Upgrade | 75% | 25% |
These changes are effective from 2026 and apply to all ongoing and future projects. The decision covers approximately 25,000 to 30,000 kilometers of national highways currently under expansion. This move is expected to provide significant savings to daily commuters and transport operators who frequently use these routes.
