Active Western Disturbances have triggered widespread rain and snow across North India, causing major disruptions to travel and daily life. The India Meteorological Department has confirmed that the system caused thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated hail over Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR on Tuesday.
Transport and Logistics Impact
The severe weather has hit the transportation sector hard, especially in the mountains. Over 525 roads are currently blocked in Himachal Pradesh, and flight operations in Srinagar have been crippled with 38 cancellations. The Jammu-Srinagar highway remains closed to traffic as authorities work to clear the path after heavy snow and rain.
Agricultural Benefits and Future Forecast
While the cold wave and rain have inconvenienced travelers, agricultural experts suggest this moisture is a boon for Rabi crops like wheat and mustard. The IMD predicts a brief respite before another Western Disturbance arrives between January 31 and February 2, which could bring further changes to the regional weather across Northwest India.
