Recent reports have brought attention to the insurance payments regarding the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. Data shows that the airline has received approximately ₹1,145 crore from insurance companies for the loss of the aircraft itself. In contrast, the families of the 259 victims have collectively received ₹228 crore so far, which is about 20 percent of the total sum settled for the plane.

Why is there a difference in the payout amounts?

Insurance experts explain that there are two different types of claims involved in aviation accidents. The claim for the machine, known as the hull claim, is straightforward and is settled quickly by global reinsurers. This is why the airline received the ₹1,145 crore for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner without delay. However, claims for passengers involve verifying legal heirs and checking documents, which is a longer legal process.

How much compensation will families receive finally?

The current payment of ₹228 crore is only interim relief and not the final settlement. Under the Montreal Convention rules, there is a minimum compensation requirement of roughly ₹1.6 to ₹1.8 crore per passenger. The Tata Group has also announced an additional ₹1 crore help for each family. The total payout per family is expected to cross ₹2.5 crore to ₹3 crore once all paperwork is completed.

What action is the Supreme Court taking?

The Supreme Court of India has agreed to look into the matter after petitions were filed seeking a proper investigation. There are concerns regarding technical issues with the aircraft, and the court will hear requests for an independent probe. The total estimated money to be paid for passenger claims is projected to reach between ₹3,000 crore and ₹4,000 crore in the coming months.
