The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather update for Bihar on February 1, 2026. A Yellow Alert is currently in place for several districts as the state battles dense fog and a continuing cold wave. Residents are experiencing a sharp drop in temperature because of cold westerly winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km per hour. This change in weather is largely due to fresh snowfall in the Himalayan regions and Western Disturbances affecting the plains.
Which districts are under Yellow Alert?
The weather department has specifically warned about dense fog conditions in North Bihar. The districts facing the Yellow Alert include Siwan, Hajipur (Vaishali), Muzaffarpur, Motihari (East Champaran), West Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, and Madhubani. In these areas, visibility could drop below 50 meters during the early morning hours. This is expected to slow down rail and road traffic significantly, so travelers are advised to be cautious.
Rain Forecast and Board Exam Updates
While the cold wave continues, the weather patterns show a possibility of light rain or drizzle on February 3, 2026. This rain is expected to impact South Bihar districts such as Buxar, Kaimur, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, and Arwal. This might bring the temperature down further.
For students, the Bihar School Examination Board is starting the Metric and Intermediate exams from February 2, 2026. Since the weather is unpredictable and fog is dense, authorities have advised students to leave for their exam centers earlier than usual to avoid delays. Parents should ensure students are dressed warmly to protect against the ‘chill factor’ caused by the high-speed winds.
