The Ministry of Civil Aviation has shared concerning data about Indian airlines in the Lok Sabha. Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol revealed that nearly 75 percent of the Air India fleet reported recurring technical issues. This information comes after a detailed analysis of 754 aircraft across six major airlines in the country since January last year. The government is now taking strict steps to ensure passenger safety.
Which airlines reported maximum faults?
The government data highlights that the Air India Group is significantly affected by these technical snags. Out of the total aircraft monitored, a large number belonging to Air India showed frequent problems. An Air India spokesperson mentioned that their numbers are high because they are doing very strict inspections. Other carriers like IndiGo and SpiceJet also reported issues. Below is the detailed list of aircraft monitored and faults found:
| Airline Name | Total Planes | Planes with Faults |
|---|---|---|
| Air India | 166 | 137 |
| Air India Express | 101 | 54 |
| IndiGo | 405 | 148 |
| SpiceJet | 43 | 16 |
| Akasa Air | 32 | 14 |
DGCA action and safety measures
Following these reports, the aviation regulator DGCA has increased its oversight to keep flyers safe. In 2025 alone, the body conducted 146 maintenance audits across different airlines. The regulator specifically flagged 51 safety lapses in Air India operations recently and asked them to fix critical issues immediately. While the total number of technical defects has gone down compared to previous years, the government has increased the number of technical staff in the DGCA to handle inspections better.
