What is the current status of the Sonepur Airport project?

Following the official approval from the Centre, the project is moving towards the next crucial steps. An Airports Authority of India (AAI) team is scheduled to conduct an Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) survey at the Sonepur site. This technical survey will happen after the team completes similar work in Rajgir. The survey determines the safety and feasibility of flight operations at the proposed location.

Which other airports are being developed in Bihar?

The Bihar government and the Centre are working together to develop a total of 15 airports to ensure air connectivity within a 200km radius for every citizen. The Bihar Budget 2025-26 has also allocated funds for these developments. Apart from Sonepur, work is progressing on several other sites:

  • Rajgir (Nalanda): A greenfield airport is confirmed with surveys underway near Silao.
  • Bhagalpur: Plans are in place for a greenfield airport, with sites being examined at Goradih or Sultanganj.
  • Raxaul: A brownfield airport is being upgraded to improve regional access.
  • Bihta and Purnia: New civil enclaves are approved to handle commercial flights.
  • Small Airports: Upgrades are planned for airstrips in Valmikinagar, Birpur, Madhubani, Munger, Saharsa, and Muzaffarpur.
