The Bihar Cabinet meeting held on Friday brought major relief for workers from the state who are employed in other parts of the country. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar chaired the meeting where 17 significant proposals were approved. The government has decided to double the financial help given to the families of migrant laborers in case of an untimely death.

Family to get 4 Lakh rupees instead of 2 Lakh

Previously, if a migrant worker from Bihar died while working in another state or country, the state government provided ₹2 lakh as compensation to the family. This amount has now been increased to ₹4 lakh. The government also noticed that families often faced huge money problems while bringing the body of the worker back to the village.

To solve this, the cabinet decided that the state government will now pay the full cost of transporting the body to the home district. This ensures the grieving family does not have to worry about travel expenses. Free medical treatment for injured workers will continue as per the old rules.

New rules for City Council Elections and Electricity

The cabinet also made a big change in how city governments work. Members of the Empowered Standing Committee in municipal bodies will no longer be nominated by the Mayor. Instead, they will be elected through a secret ballot by the elected councillors. This step is taken to make the system more fair and democratic.

Regarding power supply, the cabinet approved ₹349 crore for the scheme that gives 125 units of free electricity. This fund will ensure that domestic consumers continue to get the benefit of free power without interruption.

Other major decisions in the meeting

The government took several other steps to improve infrastructure and legal processes in the state:

  • River Research: The state will spend ₹32 crore to complete the research center in Virpur, Supaul, which studies the Kosi river.
  • Court Cases: New posts have been created to speed up the hearing of 6,000 pending POCSO cases.
  • Vehicle Rules: New rules were approved for the registration of 15-year-old private and government vehicles.
  • Development Meetings: Local MPs and MLAs will now be included in district-level meetings for better planning.
