Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, was arrested by Patna Police in a high-voltage drama late Friday night. A heavy police contingent of over 50 personnel reached his residence in Mandiri, Buddha Colony, around 10:30 PM. The arrest is linked to a 31-year-old case involving allegations of fraud and cheating in renting a house. After a standoff lasting nearly two hours, the police took the MP into custody at 12:15 AM on Saturday.

What is the 31 year old case against Pappu Yadav?

The legal trouble for the Purnia MP stems from an FIR (No. 552/1995) filed way back in 1995 at the Gardanibagh Police Station. The complainant, Vinod Bihari Lal, alleged that a person named Shailendra Prasad rented his house for residential purposes. However, it was later found that the property was fraudulently handed over to Pappu Yadav to be used as his official office.

Special Judge Praveen Kumar Malviya of the MP/MLA court in Patna had issued a property attachment order (kurki-jabti) against Yadav and two others. This strict order came after the accused repeatedly failed to appear before the court despite arrest warrants being issued earlier. The charges in the case include cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code.

High drama during midnight arrest and hospital shift

The police operation was led by City SP Bhanu Pratap. When the team arrived at the MP’s residence, a large crowd of supporters gathered at the spot to protest. Pappu Yadav initially refused to leave his home at night, citing safety concerns, but police persisted citing the court order.

After being taken into custody after midnight, he was first transported to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS). He reportedly spent the night on a stretcher there. On Saturday morning, he was shifted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) following complaints of health issues. He is scheduled to be produced before the court today.
