Official data as of February 10, 2026, shows that none of the 38 government engineering colleges in Bihar currently hold active NBA accreditation. The Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology (MIT) previously had accreditation for its Civil Engineering program, but it has recently expired. This lack of quality certification is now causing a major crisis for students who want to work or study in foreign countries.

Why Bihar Colleges Failed NBA Accreditation

The primary reason for the failure to get accreditation is a massive shortage of faculty, specifically at the levels of Professor and Associate Professor. Many colleges also lack modernized laboratory equipment and do not maintain proper Outcome-Based Education (OBE) records. On February 2, 2026, a high-level workshop was held in Patna where the Bihar Engineering University (BEU) directed all colleges to immediately prepare Self-Assessment Reports (SAR) and fix their faculty-student ratios to save student careers.

Impact on Jobs and Visas in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have implemented strict rules for Indian engineers seeking work permits. Since January 2025, Saudi Arabia has mandated academic pre-verification for all work visas. In Kuwait, the Kuwait Society of Engineers (KSE) only issues the mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) to those holding NBA-accredited degrees. Because Bihar state colleges are not accredited, their graduates are being denied visas and residency renewals in these Gulf countries.

Global Education and the Washington Accord

India is a member of the Washington Accord, which means NBA-accredited degrees are recognized as equivalent in over 20 countries like the USA, UK, and Australia. However, since Bihar colleges lack this status, students are finding their degrees categorized as non-equivalent. Many international universities are now rejecting applications from Bihar students for Masters (MS) programs, stating that their degrees do not meet international technical standards.
