A tragic incident occurred in the Rohini area of Delhi where a 32-year-old man lost his life after falling into an open manhole. The victim, identified as Birju Kumar Rai, was a daily wage laborer from Bihar. His body was recovered by the authorities on Tuesday night after a long rescue operation involving the fire brigade and local police. This event marks the second such death in the capital within a week, raising serious concerns about civic safety and maintenance.

How did the incident happen?

According to the investigation, the incident took place on Monday night around 7:30 PM. Birju was with his friend Budhan Das at the time. Police statements indicate that both men had consumed alcohol earlier in the day. While they were near a vacant plot maintained by the DDA, Birju accidentally fell into the deep manhole.

His friend Budhan did not report the accident immediately. He later told the police that he was heavily intoxicated and went home to sleep without alerting anyone. The information only came out the next afternoon when Budhan woke up and told another friend, Amir Hussain. Amir then called the police control room at 2:36 PM on Tuesday to report the missing man.

What action has the police taken?

Following the recovery of the body, the Begumpur Police Station has registered an FIR against unknown persons. ACP Rajiv Ranjan confirmed that the rescue team retrieved the body around 8:45 PM on Tuesday. The police are now looking for the specific agency or individual responsible for leaving the manhole uncovered.

  • FIR Details: Case number 96/26 registered under BNS sections.
  • Charges: Police applied Section 106 for death by negligence and Section 285 for public danger.
  • Investigation: Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to establish the sequence of events.
  • Safety Measures: The open manhole has now been covered and stones placed around it to prevent further accidents.
