The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has released a crucial update regarding the investigation into the Learjet 45 crash that occurred in Baramati on January 28, 2026. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the inquiry to find the exact cause of the accident. While the authorities have successfully retrieved data from the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) has sustained significant damage due to fire. The Ministry has assured that the probe is following international standards.
Status of Black Box and Family’s Demand
The investigation team has faced a technical hurdle with the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). The unit was exposed to prolonged intense heat after the crash, making immediate data retrieval difficult. To ensure no data is lost, the AAIB has sought help from Honeywell in the USA, the manufacturer of the device. On the other hand, the DFDR data was successfully downloaded at the laboratory in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, the family of the late Ajit Pawar has raised concerns. His son, Jay Pawar, questioned how a flight recorder designed to be indestructible could be damaged so easily. Sunetra Pawar met with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to formally demand a CBI probe, suggesting the possibility of sabotage or negligence. A preliminary investigation report is expected by February 27, 2026.
DGCA Audits and Safety Measures
Following the accident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) started a special safety audit of the operator, M/s VSR Ventures, on February 4, 2026. This audit covers crew training, maintenance records, and safety management systems. The authorities are checking if all safety rules were followed before the flight took off.
The government has also expanded its safety checks beyond just one operator. A sector-wide audit targeting 14 major non-scheduled operators involved in VIP transport is currently underway and will finish by February 25, 2026. The Ministry has also ordered a review of over 400 uncontrolled airstrips across India to prevent such incidents in the future.
