Bihar is gearing up for a major transformation in its energy sector with the establishment of the state’s first nuclear power plant. The government has accelerated preparations for this massive project in Rajauli, Nawada. With an estimated investment of ₹20,000 crore, this initiative aims to solve power issues and generate clean energy for the future. The project has received necessary approvals, and technical teams are already working on the ground to finalize the logistics.

What is the plan for the Rajauli Nuclear Site?

The first nuclear plant is proposed to be built near the Phulwaria reservoir in Rajauli, Nawada. This facility will have a capacity of 2,000 MW and will use modern Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. The central government has given its nod under the Nuclear Energy Mission. Officials expect the construction work to officially begin in the 2027-28 financial year. Currently, the Water Resources Department is conducting tests to ensure a year-round water supply from the Ganga or local reservoirs, which is crucial for the plant’s operation.

Status of surveys in Banka and Siwan

Apart from Nawada, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is looking at other locations. Surveys have been completed in Shambhuganj and Bhitiya areas of Banka district. These spots are considered good options because of the rocky terrain and low population density. On the other hand, land and water assessments are still going on in Siwan. However, technical experts are carefully evaluating Siwan because it falls in a higher seismic zone, which requires strict safety checks before any final decision.

Solar and Pump Storage Projects in Lakhisarai

The state is also moving forward with renewable energy projects to balance the power grid. In Kajra, Lakhisarai, a major solar power project is underway. The first phase involving 185 MW solar power is already functional, and the second phase to add another 116 MW is under construction, targeting completion by January 2027. Additionally, pump storage schemes with an investment of ₹13,000 crore are in the pipeline to manage surplus electricity effectively.
