Bihar government has started the process to launch international flight services from Patna and Gaya airports. Passengers will soon be able to fly directly to destinations like Kathmandu, Singapore, Bangkok, Colombo, and Sharjah. The state cabinet approved the new international air connectivity policy to boost tourism and help workers traveling to the Gulf and Southeast Asia. The tender process for airline selection is expected to complete by April 2026, with services likely starting before the summer holidays.

Flight routes and airline eligibility rules

The new policy aims to connect Bihar with major international hubs in four directions. Patna airport will focus on flights to Kathmandu using 72-seater aircraft. Gaya international airport will serve as the base for larger planes flying to Singapore, Bangkok, Colombo, and Sharjah. According to the official rules, only Indian airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet can apply for these routes. Selected companies must start their operations within three months of being picked and must fly at least twice a week.

Financial aid and subsidy for air operators

The Bihar government will provide Viability Gap Funding to ensure that ticket prices remain affordable for the common man. This grant will be provided for an initial period of six months based on the number of flights operated. Airlines are required to follow DGCA guidelines while deciding the airfare to prevent overcharging. The support details are as follows:

Route Aircraft Size Grant per Trip
Patna to Kathmandu 72 Seats 2.5 Lakh Rupees
Gaya to International cities 150+ Seats 10 Lakh Rupees
Gaya to Kathmandu 150 Seats 5 Lakh Rupees

Safety and infrastructure are also being prioritized under this plan. Land has been identified at Patna airport for the installation of a new radar system to make operations safer. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu previously confirmed that Indian airlines have the necessary permissions to operate to Gulf and Southeast Asian countries from Patna. This move will benefit thousands of students, tourists, and workers who currently travel to other states to catch international flights.
